The Representation of Women in Much Ado About Nothing Essay

The Representation of Women in Much Ado About Nothing The female characters who are in the play are all present and involved in Act2 Scene1, which makes it the perfect situation to describe Shakespeares portrayal of women in Much Ado About Nothing. Then you have the characters of Margaret and Ursula, the servants, who are also very comparable and show a portrayal of women in lower classes. However in Renaissance times it was different, there had never before been such a forward minded and witty woman taking centre stage. The character of Beatrice is fiery and rejects the models of women put upon her by society, particularly the idea of marriage. LEONATO: (to Beatrice) well, niece, I hope to see you one day fitted with a husband BEATRICE: Not till God make men of some other metal than earthà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Adams sons are my brethren, and, truly, I hold it a sin to match a kindred This is the kind of view that women could not express in Elizabethan times. Inflective and Forward Personalities In Chaim Potoks The Chosen Essay Example For Students

Inflective and Forward Personalities In Chaim Potoks The Chosen Essay In Chaim Potoks The Chosen, two contrasting characters are introducedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders. They are opposites. While Reuven is forwardà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ speaking his mind, Danny Saunders shows a stark contrastà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ an inflective soul, listening to silence, and growing from it. These characters set the stage for a lasting relationship to form, to be strengthened, and to be stressed. Dannys fathers name is Reb Saunders. The tzaddik of a small community within close proximity of Reuvens home, he was born in Russia and later brought his congregation to America. When Danny is speaking to Reuven, he tells him the story of this occurrence. They bribed their way though Russia, Austria, France, Belgium, and England. Five months later, they arrived in New York City. This was the original catalyst for the relationship between Reuven and Danny. If Reb hadnt brought his congregation to America, ever, Danny and Reuven would not have met in anything close to the same circumstances. When introducing the reader to the novel, Reuven explains why the inter-parish softball leagues were formed by the Jewish parochial schools after World War II. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Americas entry into the Second World War and the desire this bred on the part of some English teachers in the Jewish parochial schools to show the gentile world that yeshiva students were as physically fit, despite there long hours of study, as any other American student. They went about probing this by organizing the Jewish parochial schools in and around our area into competitive leagues, and once every two weeks the schools would compete against one another in a variety of sports. This was the second factor in the friendship. It would be unlikely for the matter of a soft-ball league to be considered on the part of Reb Saunders if he had not seen any particular reason. On Dannys second visit to the hospital, Danny and Reuven talk about matters of common interest. While on the topic of the baseball game, Reuven asks how he learned to hit a ball. I practiced, he said. You dont know how many hours I spent learning how to field and hit a baseball. After this statement is avowed, Danny makes the comment to Reuven that he could have ducked the ball. Reuven responds with: I remembered the fraction of a second when I had brought my glove up in front of my face. I could have jumped aside and avoided the ball completely. I hadnt thought to do that, though. I hadnt wanted Danny Saunders to make me look like Schwartzie. After Reuven initially wakes up, Danny visits him in the hospital to apologize. I am sorry, he said quietly. Ill just bet you are, I told him. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦turned and walked slowly away. After Reuven tells his father of the events, his father tells him that he should have listened. This response on Davids part initially caused Reuven to listen to Danny when he returned the second time. You did a foolish thing, Reuven,he told me sternly. You remember what the Talmud says. If a person comes to apologize for having hurt you, you must listen and forgive him. I couldnt help it, abba. You hate him so much you could say those things to him? Im sorry, I said, feeling miserable. As with playing the What If game asking what if incessantly to explore each aspect of a situation, so did a chain of events occur that caused this relationship to form. The first act was not a what if but was the original occurrence. It was Dannys father, Reb, bringing his parish to New York. .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 , .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 .postImageUrl , .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 , .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5:hover , .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5:visited , .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5:active { border:0!important; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5:active , .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5 .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udd3c625989826a1d75381c5ffd8c24d5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Attention Deficit Disorder Essay PaperIf he had not done so, Danny and Reuven would have no chance of meeting. The second event was the Americanization of the Jewish parochial schools after the Second World War. Again, if this had not happened, Danny would have had a slimmer chance of meeting Reuven, but since they lived in the same neighborhood and since Reuvens father knew Danny they may have met. The third occurrence was Dannys practicing. If Danny had not practiced, he, most likely, would not have hit the ball fiercely, straight at Reuven. The fourth occurrence was the actual scheduled game. If that game had not been scheduled, Reuven would not have been beaned with the ball by Danny. The fifth occurrence was Reuvens pride causing him to refuse to duck. If he had ducked and successfully missed the ball, he would not have gotten glass in his eye. The sixth occurrence was Dannys apologetic nature. If Danny had not been apologetic and visited him in the hospital, he would not have formally met Reuven. The seventh occurrence was Reuvens fathers advice to listen to Danny. If Reuvens father had not instructed him to listen, Reuven could have remained angry and he may have not listened. Mixed with Reuvens fathers advice, however, was Dannys persistence, if Danny had not returned, Reuven would not have had a chance to listen. There are many factors that countered into the strengthening of the relationship between Danny and Reuven. Going with the saying opposites have a certain magnetism for each other; we can state that Reuven and Danny are opposites in the matters of: religious sect of Judaism and the manner in which they were raised. Reuven was a Zionist and although Danny says that he wishes he could join the Zionist group at the university, he is a Hasid. Reuven and his father talk frequently, but Danny and his father only speak during Talmud discussions. Even though Danny and Reuven do oppose in those two matters, they are both intelligent and they both have a fancy for, basically, the same literature. Another strengthener of the relationship between Danny and Reuven is Reuvens father, Davids, talk about a brilliant man named Solomon. Solomon compared to Danny because he wanted to learn and he read philosophy and other such books. Solomon learned German in order to read original texts and he wandered the world forever to finally die an early death. This boy, Reuven, was brilliant, literally a genius. His name was Solomon, and later in life he changed his long Polish name to Maimonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦' The point of the story was to reinforce the importance of the friendship cultivating between Danny and Reuven. The final factor in the strengthening of the relationship between Danny and Reuven is Dannys father, Rebs, approval of Reuven. When Reuven is invited to Dannys house, he is publicly asked which statement in a speech was incorrect. Nu, Reuven, he said quietly, tell me, which one was not good? One of the gematriyot was wrong, I saidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ And which one was it? he asked me quietly. The gematriyot for prozdor is five hundred and three, not five hundred and thirteen, I answered. When he answers correctly, he gains the general respect of the audience and Reb, though Reb says later that he wouldnt mind if he answered incorrectly. The last part of the cycle of the comradeship between Danny and Reuven is the stress upon the relationship. Once more, many factors come into play with this part. To start with, David Malters speech on Zionism causes Reb Saunders to excommunicate the Malter family. My fathers speech had done it. Reb Saunders didnt mind his son reading forbidden books, but never would he let his son be the friend of the son of a man who was advocating the establishment of a secular Jewish state run by Jewish goyim. This quote is Reuvens thought process after he finds out that he is no longer allowed to commune with Danny. The following stressor to the relationship between Reuven and Danny is Reuvens inability to understand listening to silence. You have to want to listen to it, and then you can hear it. It has a strange, beautiful texture. It doesnt always talk. .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf , .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf .postImageUrl , .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf , .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf:hover , .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf:visited , .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf:active { border:0!important; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf:active , .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9a9c54606709f6b2ddb1a5e5c59db5bf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Turkey Vultures EssaySometimesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ sometimes it cries, and you can hear the pain of the world in it. It hurts to listen to it then. But you have to. Over the course of the novel, Danny repeatedly explains and hints at the concept of listening to silence. As Reuven shows multiple times that he doesnt understand Dannys reverence, a bit of tension grows. The finally stressor on the relationship between Danny and Reuven is Davids logically questioning Danny about his decision not to become a Rabbi. Then you must know exactly what you will tell him. Think carefully of what you will say. Think what your fathers questions will be. Think what he will be most concerned aboutà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦' When David persistently asks Danny questions as Danny half-answers, anxiety is created as the significance of the questions is revealed. All of these factors put stress on the relationship, initially, and in the end strengthened it. The first mentioned, was the difference between Danny and Reuvens religions. Although they were both Jewish, the novel shows that there were perceptible differences. The next mentioned was Reuvens inability to understand listening to silence. Although Reuven may not have seen significance, Danny found silence to be very important, even related to wisdom. The final stressor mentioned was Davids methodological questioning of Danny at the end of the novel. It created tension in an already stressful situation, although helpful. Danny and Reuvens friendship built throughout The Chosen had the roots to last a lifetime. It was apparent that Danny originally needed a friend and Reuven turned out to be the right one. Also, their fathers recognized this lasting friendship. So, each would most likely encourage it in the future.

Stanislavski Essay essays

Stanislavski Essay essays Constantin Stanislavski (1863-1938) was born into a wealthy Russian family who took part in the acting scene. Stanislavski was then shown the ropes at an early age when he joined a family friends theatre group. Stanislavski was an renowned practitioner of the naturalist school of thought. He developed the Stanislavski System other wise known as The Method. The most fundamental principle of Stanislavski's teaching is that the actor must live the life of the character that he is portraying, he must learn to think like the character and behave like the character, to become the character both physically and mentally. This, he believed, is the only way to achieve total realism. The actor must also extend this exercise of imagination to include the costumes that he wears, the articles that are in the set and the props that are used. If there is a prop then he must invent a history of where it was bought, by who and how it has come to be in this particular location, therefore completing the imaginary world which will then contribute to his performance In addition, to achieve this Stanislavski said, "the actor must first of all believe in everything that takes place onstage, and most all, he must believe what he is doing. To give substance to his ideas, Stanislavski studied how people act in everyday life and how they communicated feelings and emotions; and then he found a way to portray the same things onstage. He developed a series of exercises and techniques for the performer which had the following aims: 1) To make the outward behavior of the performer - gestures, voice, and the rhythm of movements- natural and convincing. 2) To have the actor or actress convey the goals and objectives-the inner needs of a character. 3) Even if all the visible signs of a character are mastered, a performance will appear superficial and mechanical without a deep sense of conviction and belief. 4) To make the ...

Leadership and Ethical Decision-Making Assignment

Leadership and Ethical Decision-Making - Assignment Example The consultation of the ethics review committee with the ethics consultant group is therefore very important in decision making. Business ethics provide that the contractual obligations of a company to its clients must be fulfilled (Solomon, 1999). The situation presented in this case demonstrates that the business partner did not meet his end of the bargain because the responsibilities given to him are not met as illustrated in the case. The failure of the business partner to meet the obligations provided is the basis on which the decision of the ethics review committee is to be based so that proactive action is taken against the partner. Furthermore, the failure of the business partner to meet the timelines under which the business research shows that the obligations are not met in this case. As a result, the ethics review committee in consultation with the ethics consultants group will base their leadership decision on the lack of compliance to the business obligation of the partn er. The action to be taken against the partner is motivated by the fact that the client is always the most important person for any business. This is due to the fact that it is the client who provides revenue to the company through investment and therefore capital for the company is assured through which revenue is acquired. The business partner by failing to encourage the consulting team to conduct timely business research shows that the ethical values of business practices are not practices; this is illustrated by the fact that the presentation of the research findings to the client is due in a very short time which would not enable proper research to be carried out. This is a failure of business ethical practice which is shown when the business partner uses previous research related to the one presented in the case. Because of the time differences in the business researches, and due to the changes in the business environment, application of the previous research will not be relia ble in business decision making. This would result to the loss of faith by the client on the company which will lead to eventual loss of the client. The steps of leadership decision making will be applied by the ethics review committee in this case in consultation with the ethics consultant group. This will ensure that the business partner will take business responsibility for the failure to meet the business contractual obligations by not enabling timely business research as required. The first step p in decision making is the identification of the problem or the opportunities available to the business (Di Norcia & Joyce, 2000). In this case, the problem to be identified by the ethics review committee is the failure of adherence to business ethics by the business partner. The opportunity that the business has is the possibility of convincing the client to invest in the project despite the ethical defiance by the business. Therefore the ethics review committee will base its decision of the negative implications of the problems that the non-compliance to business ethics on the firm. The ethics review committee will then gather all information relevant to the development of the business ethics case. Through the consultation with the ethics consultant group, the committee with therefore make its decision. The situation is then analyzed in the third step of decision making.

The concept of entrepreneurship Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words

The concept of entrepreneurship - Essay Example The intention of this study is the concept of entrepreneurship as the process of searching the environment to identify business opportunities for improvement, to mobilise resources and implement actions to maximise these opportunities. Thus, the kind of business venture normally involves an element of risk for which a profit reward is usually sought. Entrepreneurship also encompasses aspects such as the introduction of new goods or improving the new ones, developing the new methods of production, opening new markets as well as creating new forms of business organisation. As such, it can be observed that this is not an easy feat to achieve given that there are certain characteristics and traits necessary to start, manage and develop an entrepreneurial enterprise. Some of these traits required for staring up business are discussed below. The entrepreneur is always looking for business opportunities because he has the courage to take the risk to start a business. Whilst other people wou ld like to believe that entrepreneurs are born with special characteristics, it would be more accurate to say that entrepreneurship is learnt behaviour. The longer one continues to scout for business opportunities the more one notices profitable business opportunities. Thus, a prospective entrepreneur must always analyse himself and determine weak and strong points that characterise his personality. It can be observed that entrepreneurs possess particular characteristics that set them apart from people are not intent on starting an enterprise of their own. (Burke, 2007). Each entrepreneur has got a unique combination of characteristics and traits at his disposal for achieving success. 2.1.1 Philosophy of life The entrepreneur often tries things where the majority of people will back off (Gundill, 2006). Entrepreneurs are self starting and they are always looking for opportunities to which others have not even dreamed of and one notable aspect about these people is that they are ente rprising and they approach all things positively. Through innovation and creativity, an entrepreneur is able to identify an opportunity in the market and looks at both the positive as well as negative aspects that are related to that opportunity. The key success factor of the entrepreneurs in this particular case is that they always look at positive aspects of a given situation then look at the challenges later. This enables them to be better positioned to take the risk and approach the situation with caution fully knowing the measures that can be implemented in order to overcome the challenges or any other negative aspect that can impact on the business venture. It can be observed that every big business starts off as a small business and a good example can be drawn from the cases of McDonald’s hamburger, Apple computer as well as Ford car (Steinhoff & Burgess 1993:4). McDonald’

International Trade and Finance Speech Essay Example for Free

International Trade and Finance Speech Essay Introduction Today I would like to discuss, with you, the current state of the U.S. macro economy. I will attempt to simply address concepts and terms which focus on international trade and foreign exchange rates. Much of the discussion will focus around the surplus of imports brought into the U.S., and the impact it has on the U.S. businesses and consumers involved. I will also describe the effects of the international trade to GDP, domestic markets, and university students. It is important to understand how the government’s choices, in regards to tariffs and quotas, affect international relations and trade; so I will describe the interactive relationship in regards to tariffs and quotas, and how the government’s choices affect international relations and trade. We will also understand how foreign exchange rates are determined, and identify the reasons the U.S. does not restrict goods from China and minimize imports from other countries. Imports in the U.S. The U.S. imports many goods from various countries around the globe; and the trading of these goods plays an important role in the stability of economic growth for the U.S. The U.S. imports goods or products from other countries such as China; and if the U.S. has a surplus of imports it means there is an increase in the trade deficit, which is not good for the U.S. because trade deficits usually increase unemployment. Examples of products with an import surplus in the U.S. are China’s auto-parts. The U.S. auto-parts industry is at risk of lost jobs because of the rapid growth of auto-parts imported from China. The Chinese government unfairly subsidizes and trades auto-parts to the U.S.; which in return jeopardizes jobs related to the auto-parts industry in the U.S. Exports from the U.S. support jobs, but imports supplant production which would otherwise support U.S. employment. The U.S. auto-parts trade deficit increased from $9.5 billion in the year 2000 to $31.2 billion in the year 2010. During the year 2010, China’s exports of auto-parts exceeded their imports of U.S. products by 725 percent. The impact of this discrepancy between the two countries forces consumers and businesses, in the U.S., to evaluate which products are worth buying. Many times China’s products are manufactured just as thoroughly as their counterparts in the U.S., and they are often much cheaper to purchase. In order to save money, many U.S. companies and consumers will purchase goods from China, and also establish businesses and create jobs in that country which would otherwise benefit domestic employment (Economic Policy Institute, 2012). GDP I would like to next address the effects of international trade to the GDP, domestic markets, and university students. International trade has become important to the U.S. economy in recent years, and the benefits of a global market improve the U.S. standard of living. The problem for the U.S. is the contraction of the GDP because of reduced exports and higher imports. The outflow of domestic currency to foreign markets can decrease the currency of the dollar, and make imports more expensive to purchase. If the currency of the dollar decreases, domestic markets will suffer because now goods cost more to purchase. Domestic markets can also be affected by international trade. If imports are cheaper than domestic company products, then domestic markets may suffer because the imports are cheaper to purchase. Many international students and public and private institutions also benefit from the effects of international trade. The revenues generated by international students are important because they usually pay out-of-state tuition, and the education sector usually benefits from a trade surplus (Business Day, 2013). Tariffs and Quotas The government’s choices, in regards to tariffs and quotas, usually have a big effect on international trade and relations. Many countries rely on net exports to maximize their productions companies. When quotas and tariffs are introduced to the global market, it can affect the flow of goods and products to consumer nations; and can negatively impact the production companies. Because it is usually beneficial for international companies to maximize production, tariffs and quotas can potentially strain international relations and trade. Exchange Rates I would like to next address foreign exchange rates and what determines them. Most of us are aware that currency has a value attached to it. The difference between the two country’s currency value, and the rate for what they will be exchanged for each other; is known as the foreign exchange rate. The exchange rates are determined in the foreign exchange market, which determines the local demand for foreign currencies (Businessdictionary.com, 2013). Goods in the U.S. The question is often asked, if China has restrictions on U.S. imports, then why does the U.S. not restrict goods coming in from China? To answer the question simply, Chinese imports are important to the U.S. because China has the fastest growing markets in the world. If the U.S. were to stop imports from China, then accordingly China would stop imports for the U.S., and we would not have access that important market. It is vital to have relationships with the global market, because those trade relationships keep the U.S. relevant in the global economy. Many economists agree if the U.S. were to stop trading with foreign countries, then the entire global economy would collapse, which would result in the entire globe going into a depression. Conclusion In conclusion I would like to state that I hope I have addressed all of you questions about the current state of the U.S. macro economy. It is important to understand the importance of all countries involved with foreign trade, and how their imports and our exports directly affect the U.S. economy and our jobs. While we would like to be independent from a lot of foreign goods, the idea of total independence from foreign trade is virtually impossible. As we discussed earlier, the reason is because of our trade deficits and their countries ability to invest in the U.S. References Economic Policy Institute. (2012). The Issue of Age Discrimination in America Essay -- Age Discrimination

The Issue of Age Discrimination in America The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) protects against age discrimination under Title VII. Specifically, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), which was passed in 1967 by congress, covers discrimination against employees who are 40 or more years old. This topic should be a big concern for employers, since the number of elderly workers is increasing as the baby boomer population matures. It is estimated that as many as twenty-percent of the claims filed with the EEOC are for age discrimination. Also, age discrimination settlements can be considerably higher than typical discrimination cases. Upon research, the average award amount between 1955 and 1988 was $219,000. (www.ama.net). For this reason alone, employers should take care of how they handle their aging workers. As mentioned above, the EEOC is responsible for enforcing the age discrimination regulations, including the ADEA of 1967. This regulation is in effect supposed to â€Å"promote employment of older persons based on their ability rather than age; to prohibit arbitrary age discrimination in employment; and to help employers and workers find ways of meeting problems arising from the impact of age on employment.† (www.eeoc.gov). The ADEA presides over the boundaries for age discrimination in all aspects of employment. It not only protects against discrimination for employees, but job applicants as well. Even job advertisements must not include age d...

The Pop

1 Mixtures and Solutions: Candy Chromotography Background Information and Research Biochemists often use this method of separation when studying amino acids or other chemicals from living things. Also they use it to separate a solution with multiple components with different polarites. People use chromoography to find the things in milk, find out what chemicals are in black ink, also determine whether something is hazardous or not. Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to see what kind of dyes and colors are in the candy’s colored coating. Also to see what kind of things are in it. Materials: Candy with a colored coating, like Skittles ® or M&Ms ® (4 different colors) †¢ Rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol †¢ Coffee filters (2) †¢ Tall glasses or plastic cups (2) †¢ Pencil †¢ Ruler †¢ Tape †¢ Foil or paper plate †¢ Table salt †¢ Water †¢ Toothpicks or cotton swabs (4) †¢ Measuring cups/spoons †¢ Clean pitcher or 2-liter bottle Procedure: 1. Coffee filters usually are round, but it's easier to compare your results if the paper is square. So your first task is to cut the coffee filter into a square measuring three cm by nine cm square from a coffee filter. You will need two of these strips to complete the lab. 2. Space four drops of water (or however many colors you are testing) equally distant on a piece of foil or plate. Position one candy of each color on the drops. Give the color about a minute to come off into the water. Dispose of the candy. 3. Using a pencil (do not use a pen), draw a line one cm (1/2 inch) from the edge of one end of one strip of paper. 4. Make four pencil dots (one for each color of candy you will be examining) along this line, about 0. cm (1/4 inch) apart. Underneath each dot, label the color of the candy you will test on that spot. You won't have space to write the whole color name, so try abbreviations like B for blue, G for green, etc. 5. Before you complete the rest of the lab, make a prediction of the components you expect to see from each candy color. 6. Dip a toothpick or cotton swab into one sample of colored water and dab the color onto the pencil dot for that color. Use a clean toothpick for each co lor. Try to keep each dot as small as possible. Allow the filter paper to dry, and then go back and add more color to each dot, repeating this step a total of three times for each color. 7. Prepare the salt solution by mixing 1/8 teaspoon of salt and three cups of water in a clean pitcher or 2-liter bottle. Stir or shake the solution until it is dissolved. This will produce a 1% salt solution. 8. Pour the salt solution into a clean tall glass so that the liquid level is 1/4 inch (0. 5 cm). 9. Tape the strip to a pencil and rest the pencil on top of the jar so that the strip hangs into the jar. The goal is to have the end of the chromatography strip just touching the surface of the solvent solution, with the colored dots above the surface of the liquid. Make sure that the colored spots do not come in direct contact with the liquid in the bottom of the glass. 10. Capillary action will draw the salt solution up the paper. As it passes through the dots, it will begin to separate the dyes. When the salt water is 1/4 inch (0. 5 cm) from the top edge of the paper, remove it from the glass and place it on a clean, flat surface to dry. 11. Repeat steps two through nine (using the second strip of paper and a clean glass) to test the same four colors using the alcohol instead of the saltwater solution at the bottom of the glass. Data and Observations Original Predictions: †¢ The red M&M will travel the farthest and be the strongest. †¢ The The dye in the yellow M&M will travel less and be the lightest color. †¢ [pic] Other observations I noticed was the stationary phase matters. Both the red and yellow travveld to the front but had little separation. Red showed the lowest travelling distance. Discussion and Conclusion: The first part of this section discusses the observations and results of the lab as well as any mistakes that may have been made (or what measures were taken to try to avoid mistakes) and what improvements, if any, you can think of for the procedure for the next time the lab will be conducted. The discussion section of this lab should also include discussions on the following: †¢ A comparison of how each solution (salt water and alcohol) separated the pigments from each color of candy or ink type. Which solution worked better at separating each of the pigments (it may be different for different candy colors or inks), and why do you think that is? †¢ If you had allowed less time for the lab (stopping the separation process when the solution was half way up the paper) how do you think that would have affected your results? †¢ What pigment colors traveled farther up the paper? What pigment traveled the least? Was it the same or different when those pigments appeared in other candy colors or inks? Was it the same or different when separated by alcohol instead of salt water?

Steve Jobs - 1385 Words

In this ever growing, rapid developing world as we can see today, there are many different successful leaders. As we know it, leaders are humans just like everyone else. How did they manage to stand out from the crowd? What did they do to achieve great success for an organization? As of all the successful leaders in the world, Steve Jobs is one of the successful leaders that managed to achieve great success for an organization. Therefore, Steve Jobs is the leader that I personally admire and would like to emulate. According to Gallo (2011, p. 4), Jobs was named the best-performing CEO in the world by the Harvard Business Review. I personally admire Steve Jobs as he is one that does things in a very systematic manner which lead him to his success. Talking about success, in a YouTube video by Jandafrique (2009), it shows Jobs himself explaining the rules of success. In the video, Jobs quoted, â€Å"You got to love it, you got to have passion†. I strongly agree to what Steve Jobs had said because to succeed, you need to be passionate about what you are doing. A given task would not be a burden to one if that particular one loved their job. They would enjoy doing every bit of it if they love doing it, therefore making everything simpler and faster to accomplish. Other than that,†No matter how smart you are, you need a team of great people† (Jobs cited in Jandafrique 2009) was also quoted by Jobs. One cannot open an organization and work alone to be successful. It would almost be impossible. As quoted by John Heywood, â€Å"many hands make light work.† Therefore, this shows the ways and traits in which made Jobs an inspiring man. One of the leadership traits that Jobs go by is his very own saying, â€Å"stay hungry, stay foolish† (Jash, n.d.). Locke In Rousseau free essay sample

Locke: In Rousseau # 8217 ; s Eye Essay, Research Paper The province of nature, as described by Locke, is a province of perfect freedom, a province in which adult male is wholly free, but would Rousseau hold with this? The reply to this inquiry is more complex than it seems. Locke and Rousseau, both great philosophers of their clip, have similar thoughts, but the similarities between them end at that. They have really different positions on merely about every philosophical subject and retain these differences. When comparing two of their plants, The Social Contract, Rousseau, and Second Treatise of Government, Locke, the differences between them become clear. It about seems that The Social Contract was written to battle Locke s Second Treatise of Government, and if so, his point comes across really clearly. Rousseau begins this work on political theory much in the manner Locke did, with a treatment on the province of nature. This is the point at which we see our first difference between Locke and Rousseau. Locke describes it as a province in which every individual has power over no 1 but himself or herself and has the freedom to make as they please without jeopardizing others. He besides states that natural adult male follows a set of natural Torahs in which he can penalize any transgressor in a mode that fits the offense and in such a manner that dissuades the person from perpetrating such a offense in the hereafter. Such transgressors of the province of ground now enter one of to natural provinces ; a province of war or a province of society. In the province of war, we are non longer governed my ground, but a force. That is where the difference between the two prevarications. When adult male exists in nature, without the influence of a regulating cabal, we tend to regulate our egos harmonizing to ground. However, when this ground rails to be, and we govern ourselves by force, war ensues. In this province of war, the guiltless parties have the right to go on the war until the transgressors give reparations for the workss. These reparations can frequently stop in a province of bondage in which slave gives up all of the rights given to him by the province of nature to the maestro. At this point a contrast can be clearly drawn between Rousseau and Locke. Rousseau openly denounces the thought of bondage in the gap of The Social Contract. He feels that a province of bondage is unnatural and should be avoided. Rousseau denounces the axiom might makes right and in kernel, that is the thought behind the topic of bondage. If the result of the province of war is in the favour of the victim, and the victim, as a signifier of reparation, forces the transgressor into bondage, this axiom is proven true. The victim has asserted himself as the stronger of those involved in the struggle and is at that place by utilizing force to maintain the transgressor against his will and against the Torahs of nature. It is neer a just trade ; 1s freedom. A adult male s freedom is of extreme significance and is unable to be owned by none other than the individual himself. When freedom is lost, humanity is lost. And when humanity is lost, we can no longer be in a natural province and much less a society. There is no longer a difference between an animate being and us. There is line that can be drawn here between the manner in which work forces exist when they are enslaved and the province in which adult male exists when a society is formed. With might being the lone determinate of right, the province of bondage is about an exact reproduction of the conditions found in a monarchy. As in bondage, the sovereign has all of the power and the people of the province that he resides over are volitionally obeying his Torahs as opposed to the Torahs of nature. They have volitionally given him their freedom and are no longer free work forces, but slaves to the will of one adult male. When those populating in such a society realize that they are in fact no more than sheep in herd and make up ones mind to arise, the axiom might makes right proves itself once more, and the society is one time once more thrown into a province of war which in bend terminals in either a province of bondage one time once more or different province of society. In such fortunes, poli tical authorization ceases to be and the freshly founded province of society will be weaker than the 1 that existed before manus. It is an infinite cringle. Rousseau proposes and answer to this job in the signifier of the societal contract. It calls for every person in a community to give up themselves to the community which acts as an entity all its ain. Bing one entity, it is of import for the society to map as one. The crowned head is indivisible and should to the full show the will of those populating within it. The look of the will of those within the province is the jurisprudence, which like human nature tends to travel towards good as opposed to evil, and is expected to be followed by those shacking in the province. There is, nevertheless, a job that arises when we enter this society. The province is abstract and hence needs a physical manifestation ; a lawmaker. Once the Torahs are in topographic point and a lawmaker is found, the province can work as a province should. Locke, nevertheless thought the complete antonym of Rousseau. Locke thought that absolute monarchies were the best solution for one ground ; within an absolute monarchy, the province of nature is preserved in the sense that natural rights would non be lost. He argued that societies exist in a signifier of the province of nature and within that province, ground will be preserved and conformance will merely heighten it. This conformance was the manner in which work forces would be integrated into the societal contract, and this integrating would be best fueled if parents were to transfuse into their kids the importance of work at an early age. He believed that kids were abstract scholars and that this routes was the best. Rousseau disagreed. 337

This mission statement leads directly into Walmart Global eCommerce goals which include combining online, social innovations with physical stores to give consumers â€Å"anywhere, anytime shopping experience† in addition to its organizational sustainability goal of creating zero waste, using only sustainable energy and selling products that sustain the environment which is important to all of Walmart’s segments including eCommerce. Walmart has been a giant of the traditional brick and mortar retailers, having topped the Fortune 500 list on more than one occasion. Walmart is moving from a traditional brick and mortar discount retailer to a click and mortar discount retailer as it tries to capture the growing electronic retailing (etailing) opportunities. According to CNN Money, Walmart plans to become an online juggernaut, but its online business numbers have been disappointing. According to Business Insider, Walmart Global eCommerce has come up with a plan to do eCommerce right by using the following strategies: †¢Walmart began recruiting top Silicon Valley talent and acquiring start-ups last year. †¢Walmart is investing in the social gifting market. †¢The retailer got a better search engine. †¢Walmart is trying to lead the charge in same-day shipping. †¢Walmart is investing like crazy in its mobile app. While Walmart’s strategies have lead them to overall very good profitability in the past, their eCommerce is struggling against Amazon, an eCommerce giant, and other traditional retailers who are moving to capture customers that are turning to online purchases. Walmart appears to be moving in the right direction with its mobile application, with Smartphone sales having outpaced personal computer sales in 2011. Walmart Global eCommerce will need review and tailor its value chains in order to comprehensively differentiate itself from other click and mortar businesses. As 2014 approaches Walmart will face several issues/problems which include: Customers who can access competitor prices online when shopping in Walmart; and finding ways to successfully break into the e-tailing market which is a primarily untapped, rapidly growing market. The SWOT analysis will look at Walmart Global eCommerce as it attempts to move definitely into eCommerce while supporting all Walmart’s traditional brick and mortar businesses. Since Walmart Global eCommerce is responsible for all online and mobile innovation, this SWOT analysis will include issues pertaining to all of Walmart, but will pay particular attention to the eCommerce aspect. Stakeholder Analysis Walmart Stakeholders include the stockholders, executives, employees, suppliers, customers, non-profit groups, non-governmental organization, the communities that Walmart serves, online retailers, brick and mortar retailers, labour unions, and the government (politicians). Market Stakeholders Walmart shareholders are a market stakeholder who want a return on their investment in Walmart. Walmart executives, like shareholders, have an economic stake in what Walmart, since many receive stock options. Customers rely on Walmart to provide â€Å"Every Day Low Prices† which will only continue if Walmart performs well. Small retailers and/or labour unions may petition their government politicians to prevent Walmart from moving into their district. Governance Walmart is governed by three basic beliefs that support a business integrity which include: Service to customers; Respect for the individual; and Striving for excellence. Walmart strives to be honest by telling the truth and keeping their word, be fair by using their business influence appropriately and creating an open environment for raising questions and concerns, be objective by making decisions based on Walmart’s interests, rather than personal interests, and by avoiding even the appearance of impropriety. Walmart has a Global Ethics Office which is responsible for promoting Walmart’s culture of integrity. This includes developing and upholding their policies for ethical behavior for all their stakeholders everywhere they operate. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Walmart believes that it has an obligation to lead when it comes to CSR. Walmart is committed to using renewable energy, demonstrated by ensuring 21 percent of its electricity globally comes from renewable energy. Walmart created the Walmart Foundation which is responsible for many of Walmart’s CSR projects. The Walmart Foundation has a program in place to empower women around the world through training and career opportunities. The Walmart Foundation also gives money to support local organizations throughout the world. Value Chain Analysis – Walmart The Figure can of Walmart’s Value Chain Analysis can be found at Annex A. Human Resources (HR) Walmart’s HR practices are based on communication which is clear, concise and relates Walmart’s principles, high expectations and ethics. Walmart provides a comprehensive Health and Well-Being program. There is room to grow from a store associate to manager. These benefits come at a cost, which Walmart has tried to decrease by ensuring more employees are part-time and, therefore, not entitled to the benefits. Technology Technology integration is one of the primary focuses of Walmart, having played a vital role in its success. Walmart was one of the first retailers to use bar codes. Walmart also employs a Point of Sales (POS) system which is used to guide re-stocking. Walmart’s IT systems have been built to integrate prices, costs and sales in order to lower overall cost and increase profit across the world. Technology has permitted Walmart to ensure an effective and efficient supply chain that it leverages to provide products at low prices that it promises to customers. Walmart Global eCommerce is aggressively growing its technology infrastructure to become a leader in eCommerce. Infrastructure Real Estate Walmart makes a concerted effort to opens its stores and warehouses in ideal locations support its â€Å"hub and spoke† arrangement which support its brick and mortar stores. These stores and warehouses are supporting Walmart Global eCommerce, since this infrastructure had not been previously built to support it. Procurement Walmart deals direct with manufacturers to leverage its buying power to obtain the best price possible. Under scrutiny in the past, Walmart has moved quickly to have its suppliers’ manufacturing, subcontracting and packaging facilities follow standards which are outlined in its Standards for Suppliers. These standards include Compliance with Laws, Voluntary Labour (Slave, child, underage, forced, bonded, or indentured labour will not be tolerated. ), Labour Hours, Compensation, Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining, Health and Safety, Dormitories and Canteen, Environment, Gifts and Entertainment, Conflicts of Interest, Anti-Corruption, and Financial Integrity. Walmart has put in place a Supply Chain Capacity Building program (SCCB). The SCCB program components vary from half-day group training sessions to several months of one-on-one engagement with suppliers and factories. Walmart also ensures that the employees of its suppliers have the ability to report violations. All reports are directed to Walmart’s Global Ethics Office, where they are referred for investigation and corrective action if required. Primary Activities Inbound and Outbound Logistics These have been included together from an eCommerce perspective. Walmart has an enhanced inbound and outbound logistics system, although this has been problematic for Walmart Global eCommerce, it is working on resolving this issue so it can leverage Walmart’s brick and mortar capabilities. Walmart has adopted the concepts of distribution centers and â€Å"hub and spoke† arrangements. It is this â€Å"hub and spoke† arrangement which permits stores to effectively keep inventory levels in check while reducing transportation costs in addition to cross-docking. Walmart is always searching for ways to do things cheaper, faster which has more reliable logistics systems by implementing methods such as cross docking systems. Walmart operates their own logistics system, however Walmart Global eCommerce had to use third party warehouses in order to expedite its business. Walmart is remedying the situation by building warehouses to accommodate its eCommerce business. These practices will not only help Walmart reduce expenses, but also give it more control and flexibility. Operations Based on Walmart’s Mission statement, Walmart’s goal is to offer a wide range of products at low prices so people can live better. It carries nationally branded products, its own Great Value brand and other private label products tailored to local demand. Walmart has continuously expanded the brands it offers to meet various customer needs which include popular upscale brands such as Apple, and Sony. Walmart’s operational structure has decentralized store management which permits store managers to make decisions relating to product range and pricing. Marketing and Sales Walmart’s â€Å"Every Day Low Prices† provides appeal to its customers, because it permits customers to know that they can buy products at the lowest price all the time. Once criticized for its ethical sourcing and environmental sustainability, Walmart’s annual report affirms dedication and commitment to ethical sourcing and environmental sustainability. Customer Service Walmart tries to focus on providing customers with the best experience whether they are in store or online. In store, a Walmart associate greets each customer as they arrive, however this type of customer service has not always worked in the past. Walmart strives to have a customer oriented workforce who are motivated and believe in Walmart’s culture. Walmart could not successfully integrate into Germany, since Walmart’s American overtly friendly culture could not be successfully integrated with Germany’s very reserved culture. Summary It is impossible to look at Walmart Global eCommerce without looking at Walmart, since Walmart Global eCommerce leads all online and mobile innovations across all Walmart segments. Although doing well financially, several business news agencies have noted that Walmart is stumbling in eCommerce market as it attempts to adapt its click and mortar business strategies to its eCommerce. It appears that Walmart is attempting to take on Amazon, the king of online businesses, in eCommerce. This means that Walmart. com, started in 2000, is playing catch up, and it is only in the last few years that Walmart has invested heavily in its eCommerce. Walmart Global eCommerce is run as a distinct business, with its own headquarters, CEO and buyers who buy items specifically for its website. Although Walmart is known as pioneering the supply chain, it has not been overly successfully in imitating Amazon’s supply chain management. Walmart has tried to leverage the same supply chain as its retail stores in addition to third party warehouses, which has resulted in additional costs for delivery. Amazon’s supply chain, which uses robotic assistants to help fill orders along with warehouses that are dedicated to filling orders, has permitted Amazon to rule eCommerce with ability to deliver products to home for less. One strategy that Walmart is investing in are lockers which were initially introduced by Bufferbox. Walmart is not alone in adapting this strategy; Amazon is also using this in order to get orders into the hands of its customers more quickly, however Walmart will be able to leverage the over 10,000 stores globally to place lockers which are close to customers.
